Pyrite oxidation inhibition by a cross-linked lipid coating

چکیده
The effect of a diacetylene-containing phospholipid on the oxidation of pyrite, FeS2, was investigated. Earlier work reported by our research group showed that the adsorption of 1,2-bis(10,12-tricosadiynoyl)-sn-glycero-3phosphocholine on pyrite suppressed the extent of its oxidation by about 75% over a specific time period. Results presented here show that the pre-exposure to UV radiation of this lipid after sorption onto pyrite results in a 90% suppression. Attenuated total reflection (ATR) Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy (FTIR) suggests that the UV irradiation of the lipid does not result in degradation of the adsorbed layer. It is believed that the UV exposure results in the cross-linking and polymerization of the adsorbed phospholipid into a relatively impermeable barrier that separates the pyrite from the aqueous phase. The results of this study might have implications for the protection of pyrite from oxidation in the environment.

Pyrite Passivation by Triethylenetetramine: An Electrochemical Study
The potential of triethylenetetramine (TETA) to inhibit the oxidation of pyrite in H(2)SO(4) solution had been investigated by using the open-circuit potential (OCP), cyclic voltammetry (CV), potentiodynamic polarization, and electrochemical impedance (EIS), respectively. Experimental results indicate that TETA is an efficient coating agent in preventing the oxidation of pyrite and that the inh...
متن کاملThe effect of adsorbed lipid on pyrite oxidation under biotic conditions
The chemolithoautotrophic bacterium, Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, commonly occurs in acid mine drainage (AMD) environments where it is responsible for catalyzing the oxidation of pyrite and concomitant development of acidic conditions. This investigation reports on the growth of this bacterial species on the pyrite surface and in the aqueous phase at a pH close to 2 as well as the role of ad...
متن کاملMicrobial Oxidation of Fe2+ and Pyrite Exposed to Flux of Micromolar H2O2 in Acidic Media
At an initial pH of 2, while abiotic oxidation of aqueous Fe(2+) was enhanced by a flux of H2O2 at micromolar concentrations, bio-oxidation of aqueous Fe(2+) could be impeded due to oxidative stress/damage in Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans caused by Fenton reaction-derived hydroxyl radical, particularly when the molar ratio of Fe(2+) to H2O2 was low. When pyrite cubes were intermittently expose...
متن کاملOXIDATIVE DISSOLUTION AT BASIC pH OF A PYRITE-RICH SLUDGE DOPED WITH FLY ASH
A study of sulfur-rich sludge (71.6% pyrite) dissolution at alkaline conditions (pH ca.9) was investigated using non-stirred and stirred flow-through experiments at room temperature (26 ± 1.2oC) and O2 partial pressure of 0.20 atm. The dissolution rate of pyrite-rich sludge was calculated based on the S release (aqueous SO4) at the steady-state. Results show that: (1) in the nonstirred reactor ...

Measures to counteract AMD generation need to start at the mineral surface, inhibiting 9 mineral-oxidizing, acidophilic microbes. Laboratory and long term field tests with pyrite-containing 10 mining wastes, where Carbonaceous Phosphate Mining Waste (CPMW) was added, resulted in low 11 acidity, and near neutral drainage. The effect was reproducible, and confirmed by several 12 independent resea...
